Analog or IP CCTV Cameras? Which One Should You Choose?

Through this blog, we have tried to differentiate between the two so that you can make a better choice when it comes to keeping your property and loved ones safe.

What are analog CCTV cameras

Analog CCTV cameras capture the analog video signal and transfer it to the Digital Video Recorder through a cable. The Digital Video Recorder (DVR) will then convert the analog signal into a digital signal, compress it and store it on the hard drive. Captured video can then be viewed through monitors connected to the DVR.

What are IP Cameras

On the other hand, Internet Protocol camera or more popularly called IP cameras directly convert the analog video into digital signals and this digital video is then connected to the recorder through ethernet cable.

Therefore, it is safe to say that the main difference between analog CCTV cameras and IP cameras is in the way in which the analog video is transferred to the digital recorder.

So what type of CCTV camera is the best for you?

Features of Analog CCTV cameras

  • Less expensive
  • Simple to install
  • Lower Bandwidth required

Though these advantages may seem encouraging, it is important to remember that analog CCTV cameras require more cabling than IP camera installation. Analog cameras require cabling for the power supply as well as the Digital Video Recorder. Also, Analog cameras have a lower resolution than IP cameras.

Features of IP Cameras

  • Less wiring than analog cameras
  • Scope for expansion and upgradation
  • Advanced features like facial recognition
  • Higher resolution images.

Having said this, IP cameras cost more and require more bandwidth. Also, the high-resolution images require a larger hard drive for storage.

From the above, it can be concluded that Analog CCTV cameras are best suited for smaller areas. When the coverage of the surveillance area is not large, like small homes, retail stores or shops, analog CCTV cameras will be able to provide sufficient video security. IP cameras are better suited for large areas like large industries, warehouses and parking lots.
